What Is the Difference Between New York Strip & a Porterhouse Steak?
Beef steaks come in a wide variety of cuts. The most tender cuts, including New York strip and porterhouse steaks, come from the muscles along the cow's upper back, known as the tenderloin and the striploin.
New York Strip
-
New York strip steaks are cut from the striploin. They do not include any bone or tenderloin.
Porterhouse
-
Porterhouse steaks are one of the most expensive cuts of beef. They include meat from both the striploin and the tenderloin, with a bone between them.
Comparison
-
Porterhouse steaks are more expensive than New York strip steaks because they contain the more tender meat from the tenderloin. Porterhouse steaks are also larger: The suggested serving size for a porterhouse steak is 12 ounces, compared to 8 ounces for a New York strip steak.
