Seasoning for Chicken Burgers

Although chicken burgers are a healthy, low-fat alternative to hamburgers made with beef, they can taste slightly bland. Ground chicken readily takes on the flavor of added seasonings, and the concentrated heat of grilling or pan-frying helps accentuate those flavors. Add herbs, spices, vegetables and other flavorings to your chicken burger to suit your mood.

Barbecue

  • For barbecue-flavored chicken burgers, stir together chili sauce, molasses, hot-pepper sauce and Worcestershire sauce. Put on food-safe gloves and mix some of the sauce into the ground chicken by hand, using about 1/4 cup per pound of meat, before shaping your patties. If you are grilling the chicken burgers, press a sliced onion round onto the top of each patty before grilling. The grill's heat caramelizes the onion, complementing the spicy tones of the barbecue sauce. For extra flavor, brush additional sauce onto the patties as you are grilling them. If you are pan-frying the chicken burgers, lightly saute chopped onions before cooking the burgers, and place them out alongside the other condiments. Heat the extra sauce and serve it on the side.

Buffalo Chicken Burgers

  • Add the spicy flavor of buffalo chicken wings to your chicken burgers. Stir together butter and your favorite hot sauce. Put on food-safe gloves and mix some of the buffalo sauce into the ground chicken by hand, using about 1/4 cup per pound of meat. Shape the patties and grill or pan-fry them. Put out bowls of bleu cheese mixed with mayonnaise and ranch dressing for diners to spread onto their chicken burgers along with the leftover buffalo sauce.

Greek Seasonings

  • For chicken burgers with a Greek flair, mix finely chopped onions, garlic and oregano into the ground chicken. Form patties that are approximately half the size of regular burger patties, about 1/8 pound each. Grill or pan-fry the patties. Serve each diner two patties, each inside half of a round of pita bread. Top the chicken burgers with Tzatziki sauce, a blend of Greek yogurt, chopped cucumber, lemon juice, garlic and fresh dill. Sprinkle feta cheese, chopped tomatoes and lettuce on top of the sauce.

Pesto

  • Head to your herb garden for chicken burgers with a bold basil flavor. Blend basil, garlic, parmesan cheese, a dash of salt and olive oil in a food processor until smooth. Blend the pesto into the ground chicken in a ratio of approximately 1/8 cup to every pound of chicken. Shape into patties and grill or pan-fry. Place each cooked burger patty on a lightly toasted bun, and top with a large tomato slice and fresh or sliced mozzarella cheese. Turn the oven broiler to high and broil the chicken burgers for approximately 1 minute, or until the cheese begins to turn brown and bubbles.
