Can you put a starfish in the same tank as tropical fish?

In most cases, it is not advisable to put a starfish in the same tank as tropical fish. Here are some reasons why:

1. Diet: Starfish are typically carnivores or scavengers and may feed on small fish, shrimp, and other invertebrates found in the tank, including ornamental fish species. Tropical fish species may become food for the starfish.

2. Size and Behavior: Some species of starfish can grow quite large and have the potential to damage tank decorations and plants, as well as stress or injure smaller fish. Their unique movement and feeding behaviors can also disturb other tank inhabitants.

3. Water Parameters: Starfish generally require different water parameters than most tropical fish, such as higher salinity levels. Tropical fish may not tolerate these conditions, leading to health problems or stress.

4. Disease Transmission: Starfish may carry parasites or diseases that can be harmful to tropical fish. Proper quarantine and acclimatization procedures should be followed if considering introducing a starfish into a community tank.

5. Compatibility: Many tropical fish species are not naturally compatible with starfish. Some fish may become aggressive towards starfish, and others may be intimidated or stressed by their presence.

While certain hardy species of starfish may coexist peacefully with some tropical fish, it's generally best to keep them in separate tanks to avoid potential problems and ensure the well-being of all aquarium inhabitants.
