Why do fish appear on the surface of water before a storm?

There are a few reasons why fish might appear on the surface of water before a storm.

* Barometric pressure. Fish have swim bladders which help them maintain their buoyancy in the water. When barometric pressure drops, as it does before a storm, the air in the swim bladder expands and the fish becomes more buoyant. This can cause them to rise to the surface in search of oxygen-rich water.

* Dissolved oxygen. Fish also need dissolved oxygen in the water to breathe. Before a storm, the water can become more oxygen-depleted, which can force the fish to surface in search of air.

* Water currents. Fish are often moved around by water currents, and before a storm, the water currents can become stronger. This can cause fish to be swept to the surface of the water, where they may become stranded.

* Food. Fish are also attracted to food, and before a storm, there may be more insects and other food items on the surface of the water. This can also cause fish to come to the surface in search of food.
