How to Cook Fish Steaks (5 Steps)

Fish steaks such as mahi mahi, swordfish and tuna can be delicious and healthy alternatives to beef or chicken, and even non-fish eaters may enjoy these types of meaty, mild-flavored fish steaks.

Things You'll Need

  • 4 8-oz. fish steaks Marinade or spice rub Olive oil

Instructions

  1. Apply the marinade or rub. You can purchase a marinade, use a recipe you have or make your own. Mahi mahi goes well with cilantro and citrus and tropical fruit flavors. Swordfish goes well with simple flavors such as garlic, olive oil and lemon. Tuna goes well with a large variety of flavors, including cilantro, garlic, ginger, lemon and onion.

  2. Let the fish steaks marinate for at least a couple of hours in the refrigerator in a glass or ceramic dish covered with plastic wrap.

  3. Heat a nonstick pan coated with olive oil or cooking spray on medium heat for a minute or so and place the fish steaks in it.

  4. If the fish steaks have skin, cook them skin-side up first, letting them sit undisturbed for about three minutes. Flip over and cook for about five to seven minutes.

  5. When the fish steaks spring back when poked, they should be ready. You may want to cut into one to double-check. Remove them from the heat and let them rest a minute or so. Serve with a side dish such as potatoes, vegetables or pasta.
