How to Know if Tilapia Is Still Good

Mild, white and flaky tilapia goes with many seafood recipes. Tilapia fillets can be battered and fried, broiled, or breaded and baked for delicious dinners or scrumptious lunch fare. Tilapia tastes best fresh, but freezing fillets is a convenient way to preserve the fish for later consumption. No matter if it's fresh or frozen, tilapia has to be stored properly to avoid spoilage. Keep your tilapia fillets tasting their best by using the fish before it goes bad.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic wrap
  • Plastic freezer bag

Instructions

  1. Look at the color of the fillets. Fresh tilapia will stay good for one to two days in the refrigerator and about six to eight months in a deep freezer. The fish should have a white to pinkish-white hue. Gray-toned flesh or spots on the fish are an indication that the meat has spoiled.

  2. Check the firmness of the fish. The fillets should have a moist and dense feel. Discard fish with a soft, mushy consistency.

  3. Smell the fish. Tilapia thrives in both fresh and saltwater. Find out what environment your fish has been raised in. Good saltwater tilapia will have a seawater smell, and freshwater tilapia should have no odor at all. Throw the fish away if it smells sour, musty or foul.
