How to Thicken Gravy With Flour (3 Steps)

Many cooks find that they need to thicken gravy. Thin gravy can run off the food item it's on and mix with other things on the plate. Not everyone wants his carrots mixed with gravy. Flour thickens up the gravy. Regardless of how thin the gravy is, you need to add the flour in small amounts. Dumping too much flour in the bowl will ruin the gravy's taste and texture.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 cups flour
  • Spoon

Instructions

  1. Shake a small amount, no more than a tablespoon, of flour into the gravy. Pour in 1/2 teaspoon of water per tablespoon of flour.

  2. Stir the gravy until the flour mixes.

  3. Continue adding tablespoons of gravy and stirring until it's the desired thickness.
