How to Roast Quinoa for a Nuttier Flavor

Quinoa is called the most ancient of all the grains. It's actually a seed, and a nutritionally dense one. It's a complete protein that contains all the amino acids your body needs. Few plant-based foods contain all the essential amino acids. When you add quinoa to your meal, you get 4 grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber per 1/2 cup serving, which makes it a hearty, filling, but low-calorie addition to your plate. It is prepared and eaten in ways that are similar to rice, but roasting it before cooking brings out a richer, nuttier flavor.

Things You'll Need

  • Large bowl
  • Plate (optional)
  • Skillet
  • Vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Pour the quinoa into a large bowl and cover it with water. Swish the grains around to rinse them, then pour off the water. Repeat the rinsing process until you see no foam in your rinse water. Cover the bowl with a plate if you have trouble keeping the quinoa inside.

  2. Pre-heat a skillet on the stove, over medium heat.

  3. Add a small amount of vegetable oil to the skillet.

  4. Add the rinsed quinoa to the skillet and spread it out with a spoon.

  5. Continually shake the skillet back and forth or move the quinoa around with a spoon so it will toast evenly without burning.

  6. Remove the skillet from the heat when the quinoa appears light brown and emits a nutty aroma.
