What is a pony keg?

A pony keg is a small keg of beer, typically holding 72 US fluid ounces (2.1 L) or 1 imperial gallon (4.5 L). Pony kegs are often used for parties, picnics, or other small gatherings, as they are easily transported and can be tapped without the use of a CO₂ tank.

The term "pony keg" is thought to have originated in the early 19th century, when small kegs were used to transport beer from breweries to saloons. These kegs were often carried on the backs of ponies, hence the name.

Pony kegs are typically made of stainless steel or aluminum. They are available in a variety of sizes, but the most common size is the 72 US fluid ounce keg. This size keg yields approximately 8-10 pints of beer.

Pony kegs are typically filled with beer from a larger keg. The process of filling a pony keg is called "racking." Racking is done by attaching a hose to the larger keg and then opening the valve on the hose. The beer will flow into the pony keg until it is full.

Once a pony keg is filled, it can be tapped and served. To tap a pony keg, you will need a keg coupler and a CO₂ tank. The keg coupler is attached to the keg and then connected to the CO₂ tank. The CO₂ tank will provide the pressure needed to push the beer out of the keg.

Pony kegs are a convenient way to transport and serve beer. They are ideal for parties, picnics, or other small gatherings.
