What function is performed by ligaments in a chicken?

Ligaments help connect bones to bones and maintain skeletal stability in chickens.

Ligaments are bands of tough, fibrous connective tissue that help to hold bones together at joints. Ligaments provide passive support to the joints and limit the range of motion of the joints, thereby providing joint stability. They help prevent dislocation and aid in joint proprioception which provides the awareness of joint position and muscle forces during movement.

In general, there are:

1. Intra-articular ligaments: Within the joint capsule and connecting bony components of synovial joints

2. Extra-articular ligaments: Outside the joint capsule

For instance, the wing joints feature extra-articular ligaments for stability while ligaments at carpal (wrist) and tarsal (ankle) joints help restrict hyperextension.
