How to Bread Fish Fillets for Light Frying (8 Steps)

Homemade fish sticks make an easy dinner. Firm fish works best to create the fish sticks because they do not fall apart while frying. Salmon, tilapia, cod and snapper are all good options. Use this recipe to make fish sticks from scratch, instead of using purchased versions, which are more expensive and contain preservatives that you may want to avoid. If you're planning ahead, toss these fish sticks in the freezer to use later.

Things You'll Need

  • Fish
  • Sharp knife
  • Egg
  • Flour
  • Bread crumbs
  • 2 Wide-rimmed bowls
  • Small plate
  • Freezer bags (optional)

Instructions

  1. Slice the fish into thin strips with a sharp knife. Smaller pieces cook more quickly, speeding up the process of making dinner on a busy night.

  2. Spread the flour on a small plate. Place the egg in a wide-rimmed bowl and scramble it thoroughly until it is light yellow.

  3. Place the bread crumbs a wide-rimmed bowl. Use either fresh grated bread crumbs topped with powdered garlic and Italian seasoning or use prepackaged bread crumbs.

  4. Coat the fish in flour. This step absorbs extra moisture on the fish that prevents the breading from staying on the fish pieces.

  5. Dip the floured strip in the egg mixture. Coat both sides. Eggs are essentially the glue that holds everything together.

  6. Coat the fish in the bread crumbs for a final coating. Coat both sides evenly.

  7. Place the finished strip on a plate, and repeat until you're out of fish.

  8. Cook the fish or store them in the freezer for use at a later time. Put the fish sticks in freezer-safe plastic bags for storage.
