How is brown sugar produced?

Brown sugar is white granulated sugar that has had molasses added back in. Molasses is a thick, brown liquid that is a by-product of the sugar refining process.

Brown sugar comes in two varieties - light and dark. Light brown sugar contains a smaller percentage of molasses than dark brown sugar, which results in a lighter color and a sweeter flavor.

Molasses can also be added back to white sugar in a process called 'muscovado', giving it a deeper flavour.

Brown sugar can be made at home by adding molasses to white granulated sugar. The amount of molasses you add will determine the darkness and flavor of the brown sugar.

Brown sugar is used in many recipes, including cookies, cakes, and pies. It can also be used as a topping for oatmeal, yogurt, and ice cream.
