What is chamomile tea made of?

Chamomile tea is an herbal tea made from dried chamomile flowers. Chamomile is a flowering plant from the Asteraceae family and two major species of the plant are used to make chamomile tea. These are _Matricaria recutita_ (also known as German chamomile) and _Chamaemelum nobile_ (also known as Roman chamomile). The flowers of these plants are daisy-like and have a sweet, apple-like aroma. To make chamomile tea, the dried flowers are infused in hot water and steeped for several minutes. The resulting tea is a pale yellow colour and has a slightly sweet, floral flavour.

Matricaria recutita (German chamomile) native to Eurasia is also widely naturalized in Eastern, Southern and Southeastern United States.

Chamaemelum nobile (Roman chamomile) originates from Southern and Western Europe.
