Is a stainless steel teapot with rust inside still safe to use?
It depends.
If the rust is minor and only in the form of a few small spots or light discoloration, it is LIKELY SAFE to continue using the teapot as long as you clean and dry it thoroughly after each use. However, if the rust is covering a large surface area or is flaking or peeling, the teapot is NOT SAFE to use and you should DISCARD IT IMMEDIATELY.
When stainless steel is exposed to water, oxygen, or acids, it can react to form iron oxide, which is what is commonly known as rust. Rust can potentially contaminate your tea and be detrimental to your health. While stainless steel is generally resistant to corrosion, it can still rust if it is not properly cared for.
To help prevent rust, it is important to:
- Clean and dry your stainless steel teapot thoroughly after each use.
- Avoid using harsh detergents or abrasive cleaners, which can damage the protective layer on the stainless steel.
- Do not allow the teapot to sit in water for an extended time.
-If the teapot does develop some small spots of rust, try cleaning it with a solution of baking soda and water.
