How to Make Cactus Tea
Cactus tea, usually created from the prickly pear, is a large part of the beverage culture for indigenous people in the southern United States and Central and South America. The beautiful flowers emit a faint sweet smell and provide a variety of nutrients and medicinal properties to the drinker, including aiding the management of diabetes. However, above all, the tea is delicious and soothing any time of day.
Things You'll Need
- Dried cactus flowers
- Tea ball
- Kettle
- Large mug
Instructions
-
Fill a small tea ball with 2 teaspoons cactus flowers. Place the lid tightly on top.
-
Set the tea ball in a large mug, attaching it to the side with the metal clip.
-
Turn the kettle on and allow the water to come to a rolling boil. Turn the kettle off and allow it to cool for 2 to 3 minutes to reduce it from boiling temperature.
-
Pour the hot water over the tea ball into the mug. Fill it to the desired point in the mug, realizing that when the tea ball is removed, the water amount will drop.
-
Steep the tea for 5 to 7 minutes, according to how strong you desire the flavor. The longer the tea ball remains in the water, the stronger the tea will be.
-
Remove the tea ball. Allow the drink to come to an appropriate temperature before drinking so it does not burn you.
