Can You Use Frozen Drink Mix Without Alcohol?

Frozen drinks are undeniably refreshing on a hot day, and with the variety of frozen drink mixes available in the marketplace, they are easier than ever to recreate at home. Typically made in a blender and consisting of a mix, liquid and ice, frozen drinks can be enhanced with a variety of fresh ingredients. Most commercially available frozen drink mixes call for alcohol, but you can produce a delicious frosty beverage by leaving out the spirits.

Daiquiri

  • One of the most popular frozen drinks is the fruity Daiquiri. Available in multitude of flavors, from strawberry to banana to watermelon, this drink has an exotic island vacation feel to it. Add Daiquiri mix, ice, any additional juice or cut-up fruit to your blender and blend until icy. Serve in a tall glass garnished with fruit. For a creamy daiquiri, top your drink with whipped cream.

Pina Colada

  • Created in San Juan, Puerto Rico in the 1950s, this tropical beverage is a blend of coconut cream, pineapple juice, rum and ice. Use frozen pina colada mix without adding rum for a tasty concoction. Blend the mix and ice until smooth and pour into a tall glass garnished with a wedge of pineapple and a cherry.

Margarita

  • Typically created with tequila and enhanced with a salted rim to bring out the flavors in the lime and balance the sweetness of the drink, the margarita is classically paired with chips and salsa. Simply leave the tequila out of the frozen drink mix for a sweet, fruity drink. Salt the rim of a cocktail glass by rubbing a piece of lime along the rim and dipping the glass into granulated salt. Add margarita mix or frozen limeade, orange juice and ice to your blender and blend thoroughly. Pour the drink into the cocktail glass and garnish with a wedge of lime. For a tasty variation, add cranberry juice to the blender along with the other ingredients. To serve, pour into an unsalted cocktail glass and garnish with a toothpick speared with a strawberry and a lime wedge.

Creamy Drinks

  • Whether a mudslide is your poison or a fruit-based smoothie is in order, there are endless possibilities when creating frozen creamy drinks. The standard frozen mudslide contains a blend of Irish cream, coffee liquor and ice. To make a similar treat without using alcohol, blend the mudslide mix with milk or ice cream, coffee and ice. For a delicious chocolate flavor, add instant cocoa mix. To make a more nutritious shake, omit the coffee and add a tablespoon of peanut butter. Add any kind of frozen fruit to a smoothie mix, omit the alcohol and blend with ice. Add juice, milk or yogurt to the blender for a cool and healthy infusion that is sure to please on a hot summer day.

Slushy

  • Gone are the days of slushies only being available at convenient stores in bright blue or red sugary concoctions. Nowadays, you will find them adorning trendy restaurant and bar menus in exotic flavors. You can create non-alcoholic slushies at home using a variety of frozen concentrates, from multi-fruit drink mixes to basic frozen lemonade or limeade concentrate, by simply omitting the alcohol. Add the mix of your choice to a blender with crushed ice and blend. For a chic twist and extra vitamins, add cut-up watermelon chunks and sliced strawberries before blending. Pour the drink into a cocktail glass and garnish with a sprig of mint. A paper umbrella is optional.
