How to Cut the Liquor Taste
The taste of even the strongest liquors can be masked in a drink when mixed with the right balance of sweet and sour. Try pouring strong liquor -- even grain alcohol -- into a drink made with a powdered mix and sugar, and you will taste almost nothing but sugar and citric acid. You don't have to be stuck drinking your liquor in cheap red punch, however. Just use the same basic properties found in powdered drink mixes to create a "sour"- style cocktail.
Things You'll Need
- Small saucepan
- Cocktail shaker
- Cocktail strainer
- 2 oz. hard liquor
- 2 tbsp. lemon juice
- 1 tsp. fine sugar or sugar syrup
- Ice cubes
- Highball glass
- Maraschino cherry (optional)
Instructions
-
Make the sugar syrup for adding to your drink by mixing 1 part sugar with 1 part water.
-
Heat the sugar and water mixture in a small saucepan over medium high heat until all the sugar has dissolved. Chill before using.
-
Add liquor, lemon juice, sugar or sugar syrup and a few ice cubes to a cocktail shaker and cover.
-
Shake the cocktail for about 30 seconds.
-
Strain the cocktail into a highball glass and add one or two ice cubes to the drink, if desired. As the ice cubes melt, they will also aid in toning down the strong taste of the liquor.
-
Garnish with a cherry, if desired.
