How to Make a Piña Colada

You need 3 main ingredients to make a pina colada: pineapple juice, rum and cream of coconut -- not to be confused with coconut water, which is thinner, and coconut cream, which is unsweetened. The key to making a pina colada that's creamy and fruity without being cloyingly sweet is to keep the proportion of juice and cream of coconut balanced with that of the rum. To personalize your pina colada, experiment with different types or combinations of rum.

Things You'll Need

  • Pineapple juice
  • Cream of coconut
  • Rum
  • Blender
  • Heavy cream, coconut milk or soy milk (optional)
  • Crushed ice
  • Tall cocktail glass, such as poco grande or tiki, chilled
  • Pineapple wedge
  • Maraschino cherry

Instructions

  1. Measure pineapple juice, cream of coconut and rum into a blender. Use 1 part rum to 1 1/2 parts each cream of coconut and pineapple juice for a single drink. All of the rum can be one type or it may comprise a mixture of different varieties, such as white, dark, spiced or coconut rum.

  2. Add a splash of heavy cream, coconut milk or soy milk for extra creaminess, if desired. Pour crushed ice into the mixture, using approximately 1 cup of ice per serving.

  3. Put the blender's lid securely in place. Turn the setting to high and puree the mixture until smooth.

  4. Pour into a tall, chilled glass such as a poco grande or tiki glass. Garnish the top of the pina colada with a wedge of fresh pineapple and a maraschino cherry before serving.
