When was coffee invented?

Coffee was first consumed around the 15th century by Sufis in Yemen, although the earliest evidence of its use dates back to the 10th century. The first coffee beans are said to have been exported from Yemen to Mecca, where it was soon used as a stimulant by the Sufis. Coffee drinking spread throughout the Middle East, Turkey, and North Africa by the 16th century, and it was introduced to Europe by Venetian traders in the 17th century.
