Does making a cup of coffee involve dissolving?

Making a cup of coffee involves both dissolving and extraction. When you add coffee grounds to hot water, some of the soluble components of the coffee, such as caffeine and flavour compounds, dissolve in the water. This process is known as dissolution. At the same time, other components of the coffee, such as the ground coffee particles, do not dissolve but remain suspended in the water. This mixture of dissolved and suspended components is what we recognise as brewed coffee.

Therefore, making a cup of coffee involves both dissolving (for soluble components) and extraction (for insoluble components).
