How did colonists brew coffee?

The early colonists brought their traditions of coffee brewing with them. Originally, they used a metal or earthenware pot called a “coffee kettle.” The finely ground coffee was brewed in boiling water, and a simple strainer was used to remove the grounds from the brewed coffee. The colonists also created a popular drink known as “pepper and coffee”: a combination of roasted coffee beans, ground peppercorns, and sugar, which was then boiled with water.
