Coffee Cup Calorimeter:
1. Construction:
- A coffee cup calorimeter is simpler and consists of a Styrofoam or plastic cup (similar to a coffee cup).
- The cup is filled with a known volume of water, and the reaction container (usually a test tube or small beaker) is placed inside the water.
2. Procedure:
- The reaction is carried out in the reaction container, and the heat released or absorbed is transferred to the water.
- The temperature change of the water is measured using a thermometer.
3. Measurement of Heat:
- The heat involved in the reaction is calculated based on the temperature change of the water, the mass of water, and the specific heat capacity of water.
The main difference between a bomb calorimeter and a coffee cup calorimeter lies in the way heat is contained and measured. Bomb calorimeters operate under high pressure and enable precise measurements of heat changes in high-energy reactions. On the other hand, coffee cup calorimeters are simpler to use and suitable for measuring heat changes in low-energy reactions.
Bomb calorimeters are often used for accurate determination of the calorific value of fuels and explosives, among other applications. Coffee cup calorimeters, due to their simplicity, are commonly used in introductory chemistry labs to demonstrate heat changes in simple chemical reactions.
