Why is a beer growler called growler?
There are several theories and legends about how growlers got their name. Here are some of the most common ones:
- The most common theory is that it comes from the gurgling sound the growler makes when beer flows into it.
- Another theory is that it is named after the sound the glass jug used to store beer made while being shaken before drinking.
- A third theory links the origin to the old days of the Oregon frontier when miners brought water to the gold fields in galvanized iron buckets. These containers were known as 'growlers' as the air escaping created a growling sound.
Some people believe that the term growler originates from old English, where the word "to growl" meant to mutter or grumble.
- Yet another less popular theory is that it comes from the use of the jug as a type of weapon. When swung, it would make a growling sound.
