How to Chill a Keg of Beer

A well-placed keg of beer can turn an event into a party, but there's nothing worse than warm beer. With just a few tools, you can keep a keg sufficiently chilled throughout the evening. Whether you're planning an event for a fraternity, club or concert, don't forget the ice.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic bucket or tub
  • 20 to 30 lb. ice

Instructions

  1. Decide where you want your keg to be located during the event. Place a keg tub that's at least 19 gallons in the spot. The tub should have two handles.

  2. Have someone help you hoist the keg into the tub. Center the keg in the tub. There should be a little space between the keg and the tub on every side. Insert the keg tap. If the hose and nozzle are already attached, position the tap so that the nozzle faces a convenient direction.

  3. Ten minutes before the event begins, open the bagged ice and fill in the space between the keg and the tub. Fill the bucket almost to the brim with ice. Pour more ice on the top of the keg around the tap.

  4. Throughout the evening, add more ice to the bucket to keep the keg cold. If the bucket fills with melter water, remove the keg and dump the water. Then refill the ice.
