Mr. Beer Home Brewing Kit Instructions (18 Steps)
The Mr. Beer Home Brewing kit lets you brew at home in as little as 14 days, a process that results in premium beer at a fraction of the cost. The kit is reusable for continual brewing, and other supplies are available for reorder on the Mr. Beer website (see Resources). Everything you need comes in the kit, and all you add is water and sugar. This kit makes it possible for anyone who enjoys beer to brew it at home.
Things You'll Need
- 1 gallon container
- 3 qt. pot (or larger)
- Metal spoon (not wood or plastic)
- Can opener
- Measuring spoons
- Measuring cup
- Sugar (white, granulated)
Sanitize
-
Fill the Mr. Beer keg with lukewarm water up to the 4-qt. mark, and add half the packet of the One-Step No-Rinse Cleanser included in your kit. Close the lid and swish the liquid around so it touches all surfaces.
-
Open the lid and place all utensils that will come in contact with your beer into the keg. Let it soak for 10 minutes.
-
Drain the liquid out and air dry. No need to rinse.
Brew
-
Fill the keg with cold water up to the 4-qt. mark.
-
Place the unopened can of hopped malt extract (HME) in hot tap water to warm the liquid so it pours more easily.
-
Place 4 cups of water into a clean 3-qt. pot, using your sanitized measuring cup.
-
Pour in the contents of the Booster packet very slowly, and avoid clumps by stirring constantly with your sanitized metal spoon.
-
Place the pot on the stove and bring it to a boil. Remove it from the heat when you see bubbles.
-
Stir the warmed HME into the pot. You have now created what brewers call the "wort."
-
Pour the wort into the keg, adding cold water as needed to fill it to the 8.5-qt. mark. Stir well to incorporate all ingredients.
-
Stir the contents of the yeast packet into the keg. Allow the mixture to rest for 5 minutes before stirring vigorously. Screw the lid tightly onto the keg.
-
Store the keg in a cool, dry, dark place where it can sit undisturbed for a minimum of seven days. Fourteen days is the optimal length of time to store the keg.
Bottle
-
Fill a one-gallon container with warm water, and add the rest of the One-Step No-Rinse Cleanser included in your kit.
-
Use this water to fill each bottle (included in your kit) halfway. Close the tops, shake, and let them soak for 10 minutes before emptying.
-
Add sugar to each bottle. The amount varies depending on the size of bottle used. Add 3/4 tsp. to 12-oz. bottles, 1 tsp. to 16-oz. bottles, 1 1/4 tsp. to 20-oz. bottles, 1 1/2 tsp. to 22-oz. bottles, and 2 1/2 tsp. to 1-liter bottles. Measure carefully. Adding too much sugar can result in too much pressure, causing bottles to burst.
-
Place the bottles under the keg tap and fill just to the base of the neck, leaving about 2 1/2 inches of space between the beer and the top of the bottle.
-
Screw on the caps tightly, and turn the bottles upside down a few times.
-
Place the bottles in a cool, dry, dark place where they can sit undisturbed for a minimum of seven days. Allowing them to sit for 14 to 21 days will result in superior carbonation and flavor.
