Instructions on How to Make a Soap Bar
Materials:
* 1 pound lard or vegetable shortening
* 1 cup water
* 1/4 cup lye
* 1/2 cup of essential oil (optional)
Equipment:
* Mixing bowl
* Wooden spoon
* Glass thermometer
* Soap mold
Instructions:
1. Prepare the mold. Line a soap mold with parchment paper.
2. Melt the lard or shortening. Heat the lard or shortening in a microwave or on the stovetop until it is completely melted.
3. Add the water. Slowly add the water to the melted lard or shortening, stirring constantly.
4. Add the lye. Slowly add the lye to the mixture, stirring constantly. Be careful, as lye can cause burns.
5. Add the essential oil. (Optional) If desired, add the essential oil to the mixture and stir until well combined.
6. Stir for at least 5 minutes, or until the mixture reaches 130 degrees F.
7. Pour the mixture into the mold. Pour the mixture into the prepared soap mold and let it cool for 24 hours.
8. Cut the soap. Once the soap has cooled, cut it into bars.
9. Let soap bars air-dry for at least 2 weeks. Let bars air-dry in a cool, dry place to make them hard.
Tips:
* Be careful when handling lye, as it can cause burns.
* If you are making soap for the first time, it is a good idea to research the process or watch a video demonstration.
