How to Make a Sweet & Sour Mix With Fresh Fruit

Finely made sweet and sour mix is not only one of the more versatile ingredients found in cocktails, but one that you can quickly and easily make in your own kitchen -- all you need is a little fruit and a little more elbow grease. Homemade sweet and sour mix needs only two fruits, lemons and limes, for its sourness and simple syrup, which is just sugar and water, for its sweetness. Sweet and sour made with fresh fruit adds both taste and sophistication to your cocktails.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring cup or spoon
  • Medium saucepan
  • Water
  • Sugar
  • Cutting board
  • Paring or sharp knife
  • Lemons
  • Limes
  • Plastic juicer
  • Hand towel
  • Small bowl
  • Large bowl

Instructions

  1. Pour water into a saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and stir in an equal amount of sugar. Simmer and stir for 10 minutes, then allow the contents to cool for the simple syrup.

  2. Cut a lemon in half, holding it firnly on the cutting board with your thumb and forefinger at each end. Cut an equal amount of lemons and limes in this fashion.

  3. Place a lemon half on top of the juicer, press down firmly and rotate from side to side to extract the juice. Juice the rest of the lemons in this fashion.

  4. Record the amount of juice you squeeze using the measurements on the juicer's receptacle or a measuring cup. Pour the lemon juice into a bowl.

  5. Place a lime half on top of the juicer, press down firmly and rotate from side to side. Juice the rest of the limes or until you have as much lime juice as lemon juice.

  6. Pour 3 parts each of lemon and lime juice and 2 parts simple syrup into the large bowl, then stir them together with a spoon for fresh sweet and sour mix.
