How to Make Baked Beignets

The beignet is a delicious treat from the southern United States. Beignets resemble doughnut bites and can be filled with various preserves, chocolate or other fillings. While beignets are usually fried in a big pot of oil, you can bake beignets in the oven instead. Baking beignets instead of frying them will save you the headache of babysitting them while they fry and also save you calories. Impress your household by making oven-baked beignets for your next dessert.

Things You'll Need

  • Whole milk
  • Buttermilk
  • Quick-rising active dry yeast
  • Flour
  • Baking soda
  • Salt
  • Granulated sugar
  • Egg
  • Confectioners’ sugar

Instructions

  1. Bring milk to a low simmer and remove from heat. Add twice as much buttermilk as there is milk. Then pour into a bowl.

  2. Whisk in a few tablespoons of active dry yeast and let stand for about five minutes.

  3. Slowly mix in the flour, baking soda and salt. Use 2.5 times more flour than buttermilk and about half a teaspoon of baking soda and a dash of salt. Add granulated sugar and an egg.

  4. Mix until dough forms. Knead dough on a lightly floured surface. Then cover in plastic wrap and let stand.

  5. Pull dough into chunks and place on a greased cookie sheet and bake at about 400 degrees Fahrenheit until golden brown. Serve with confectioners’ sugar on top.
