How to Make a Fondant Head (6 Steps)
A fondant head is a charming decoration when done right, but an almost unnerving monstrosity when done wrong. While making the head takes patience, it can be accomplished by people new to cake decorating. You don’t even need anything beyond basic cake decorating tools. Whether you’re topping a cupcake or a cake, you can make a small, cartoonish noggin to suit. Practice is the only secret to creating a fondant head that looks more like a bride than a bride of Frankenstein.
Things You'll Need
- Powdered sugar
- Pastry brush
- Rolling pin
- Knife
- Kitchen scissors
Instructions
-
Dust your hands and a hard work surface with powered sugar. Roll a piece of fondant, in the color of your choice, into a smooth, 3-inch-wide ball. Press the tip of your pinky into the upper left side of the ball to make an eye socket, making a 1-inch-deep hole. Repeat process with the upper right side of the ball. Set the ball aside.
-
Roll a piece of white fondant into a 1-inch-thick ball. Roll a sesame-seed-size ball of black fondant. Brush the back of the black ball with a little water. Press the black ball, wet side down, onto the middle of the white ball to create an eye. Smooth the edge of the black ball into the white ball gently with a wet pinky so that the pupil looks flat against the eyeball. Repeat the process to create a second eye.
-
Brush the back of an eyeball with a little water. Press the eyeball, pupil out and centered, into the left eye socket. Repeat the process with the second eyeball in the right eye socket.
-
Roll a 1/2-inch-thick ball from the same fondant color you used for the head. Brush the back of the ball with a little water. Press the ball below the eyes to create a nose. Leave the nose as is for a cartoon look. Press the top of the ball into the head slightly and pinch the bottom of the ball gently to create a realistic nose.
-
Pinch off a 1/4- to 1/2-inch-wide piece of red fondant, depending on how large you want the mouth. Use your fingers to roll and sculpt the mouth into your desired shape, such as a “U” shape for a cheerful look or into a puckered mouth for a romantic look. Brush the back of the mouth with a little water. Press the mouth onto the fondant head.
-
Roll hair-colored fondant into a 1/4-inch-thick sheet. Cut an oval slightly larger than the head from the fondant to create basic hair with bangs. Cut the oval longer for longer hair. Cut shallow, wavy lines in the fondant with a knife to create a hair pattern. Brush the underside of the hair with water. Position the oval over the head so that the front creates short bangs. Press the hair to the head, smoothing it as needed. Trim the oval as needed with kitchen scissors to achieve the desired look.
