How to Decorate Cupcakes Fiesta Style (5 Steps)

Say “ole” to south-of-the-boarder decorations for cupcakes with a fiesta style. A fiesta is a joyous festival in Spanish-speaking cultures, including Mexican. The celebration includes ample music, dancing, refreshments and vibrant decorations. Invoking the same spirit on a cupcake requires colorful accents and the ability to shape fondant -- a pliable sugar dough -- into the shape of a Mexican sombrero.

Things You'll Need

  • Powdered sugar
  • Blue fondant
  • Pastry brush
  • Yellow fondant
  • Green fondant
  • Red fondant
  • Rolling pin
  • Knife
  • Yellow frosting
  • Spatula
  • Sprinkles, multi-colored

Instructions

  1. Sprinkle a hard surface with powdered sugar and roll out a sheet of blue fondant 1/4 inch thick. Cut a circle from the dough, 2 1/2 inches wide. Measure inward 1/2 inch from the edge of the circle to determine the hat’s brim size. Turn the 1/2-inch edges of the circle upward, like the brim on a hat. Repeat the process for each cupcake you intend to decorate.

  2. Roll out a ball of blue fondant, 1 inch wide. Flatten the bottom of the ball and pinch the top to create a triangle shape. Brush the bottom of the triangle lightly with water. Press the triangle into the center of the circle to create a sombrero. Repeat the process to create multiple hats.

  3. Roll out poppy-seed sized balls of assorted colored fondant such as yellow, green and red. Brush the back of each ball lightly with water. Press the balls evenly along the turned up brim of each sombrero. Change the color pattern to customize each hat, as desired. For example, use yellow, green, yellow on one sombrero; red, yellow, green on another.

  4. Smear a light layer of yellow frosting onto a cupcake, using a spatula. Spread the frosting around the cupcake top and smooth it. Repeat the process with each cupcake.

  5. Place a fondant sombrero onto the middle of each frosted cupcake. Dust each cupcake, including the hat, with colorful sprinkles.
