What are popcorn ears?
Popcorn ears is an informal name given to the condition in which tiny sacs form behind the eardrum or behind the earlobe. As these fluid-filled sacs enlarge, the ear looks swollen and has the appearance of popcorn kernels.
Medically known as cholesteatoma, popcorn ears are mostly prevalent among children and adults under 50 years. In addition to a swollen appearance, popcorn ears are also associated with several other symptoms, including drainage of fluid from the ears, hearing loss, dizziness, and chronic ear infections.
The exact cause of popcorn ears is unknown, but it is believed to be the result of a combination of factors such as:
- Repeated ear infections
- Allergies
- Poor hygiene
- Dysfunction of the Eustachian tube
- Skull deformities
- Cystic fibrosis
It is important to seek medical attention if you suspect that you or your child may have popcorn ears, as prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent complications. Treatment for popcorn ears may include antibiotics to clear up any infections, ear drops, earwax removal, or surgical intervention in severe cases.
