How did cotton candy get its name?

The name "cotton candy" was coined in 1897 by confectioner William Morrison. Morrison was inspired by the machine he used to make the sugary treat. The machine was shaped like a cotton ball and produced fine strands of sugar that resembled cotton. Morrison thought the name "cotton candy" was a perfect fit for the product.
