How was laffy taffy invented?
The origin of Laffy Taffy is shrouded in some uncertainty. However, several accounts and references suggest its creation and development:
1. Inspiration: The inventor of Laffy Taffy, Joseph C. Hoagland, was inspired by the flavors and textures of saltwater taffy, a popular candy at the time. He set out to create a taffy that could withstand warm temperatures and retain its chewiness.
2. The Original Inventor: Joseph C. Hoagland, from the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is widely credited with inventing Laffy Taffy. He worked as a candy maker and confectioner at his family's candy company called "Hoagland's Candies."
3. Experimental Candy: In the early 1970s, Hoagland experimented with various recipes, aiming to create a taffy that would be softer than traditional saltwater taffy. His experiments resulted in a taffy that was both flexible and chewy, able to withstand higher temperatures.
4. Production and Distribution: Hoagland began producing and distributing Laffy Taffy locally from Hoagland's Candies. The initial flavors introduced included cherry, strawberry, banana, and grape, among others.
5. Licensing Deal: In 1973, Hoagland sought to expand the production and distribution of Laffy Taffy. He secured a licensing agreement with the Farley Candy Company, which was renowned for its production of Brach's candies. Farley's subsequently took over the manufacturing and distribution of Laffy Taffy.
6. National Popularity: Under the manufacturing umbrella of Farley's, Laffy Taffy gained nationwide recognition and popularity. The candy became a top-selling favorite, capturing a significant share of the taffy market.
7. Changing Ownership and Expansion: Over the years, the Farley Candy Company and its brands, including Laffy Taffy, underwent changes in ownership. In 2018, Ferrara Candy Company acquired the Ferrara Pan division of Nestlé, which included the Laffy Taffy brand, along with other popular candies.
Today, Laffy Taffy continues to be a beloved and iconic candy brand in the United States, still offering a range of fruity flavors and the signature fun and chewy texture that made it a favorite treat for generations.
