How to Make Candy Bugs (7 Steps)

Making bugs out of candy can be a fun project for kids as young as preschool age because the technique is so simple. These bugs are handy, too. They can be used to decorate cakes, party platters and centerpieces. Or, if you like, the cute little bugs can simply be played with and devoured. If you purchase your candy in bulk or at discount stores, each bug can be made for only pennies, making it an economical project as well.

Things You'll Need

  • Various candies Wooden toothpicks Dried cloves

Instructions

  1. Choose a large piece of candy for the body. A fun size candy bar or a large marshmallow is the perfect sized candy for bug bodies.

  2. Choose four, six or eight candies for legs. Licorice whips or sour straws make great legs for spiders. Small gumdrops, Hot Tamales or Tootsie Rolls can be cute legs for smaller bugs.

  3. Break a toothpick in half and poke it halfway into the leg candy. Stick the other end of the toothpick into the body candy. Repeat this step for all of the legs.

  4. Choose a candy for the head. Gumdrops or half a large marshmallow work well.

  5. Attach the head by poking half a toothpick into the head and then poking the rest of the toothpick into the body.

  6. Add eyes by pushing dried cloves into the head.

  7. Make different kinds of bugs by varying the types of candies you use. You can also make rainbow colored bugs or monochromatic bugs by selecting certain colored candies.
