How to Use Paraffin in Buckeye Balls

Buckeye balls are peanut butter rounds partially coated with a smooth chocolate to resemble a buckeye tree nut. The glossy finish on the chocolate coating comes from the addition of paraffin wax to the chocolate. This edible wax gives the chocolate a sheen which makes the buckeye balls aesthetically pleasing. Look for paraffin with candy-making supplies in hobby and candy-making stores.

Things You'll Need

  • Small saucepan
  • 2 metal bowls
  • Wooden spoon
  • 1 oz. paraffin wax, about ¼ sheet
  • 12 oz. chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
  • Wax paper

Instructions

  1. Fill a small saucepan halfway with water and bring to a boil over medium heat.

  2. Place one metal bowl on top of the saucepan with the chocolate chips or chopped chocolate in it.

  3. Heat the chocolate in the metal bowl over the simmering water and stir with a wooden spoon until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth. Do not get water into the melted chocolate to prevent it from seizing.

  4. Remove the bowl of melted chocolate and place the second bowl with the wax in it over the simmering heat. Stir the paraffin wax until it completely melts.

  5. Pour the melted paraffin into the melted chocolate and stir them together until smooth.

  6. Dip a buckeye ball center into this as the exterior chocolate coating to cover all of the round center except a small wedge to resemble a buckeye nut. Cool the buckeye balls on wax paper until completely cool and hardened.
