How to Use Paraffin in Buckeye Balls
Buckeye balls are peanut butter rounds partially coated with a smooth chocolate to resemble a buckeye tree nut. The glossy finish on the chocolate coating comes from the addition of paraffin wax to the chocolate. This edible wax gives the chocolate a sheen which makes the buckeye balls aesthetically pleasing. Look for paraffin with candy-making supplies in hobby and candy-making stores.
Things You'll Need
- Small saucepan
- 2 metal bowls
- Wooden spoon
- 1 oz. paraffin wax, about ¼ sheet
- 12 oz. chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
- Wax paper
Instructions
-
Fill a small saucepan halfway with water and bring to a boil over medium heat.
-
Place one metal bowl on top of the saucepan with the chocolate chips or chopped chocolate in it.
-
Heat the chocolate in the metal bowl over the simmering water and stir with a wooden spoon until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth. Do not get water into the melted chocolate to prevent it from seizing.
-
Remove the bowl of melted chocolate and place the second bowl with the wax in it over the simmering heat. Stir the paraffin wax until it completely melts.
-
Pour the melted paraffin into the melted chocolate and stir them together until smooth.
-
Dip a buckeye ball center into this as the exterior chocolate coating to cover all of the round center except a small wedge to resemble a buckeye nut. Cool the buckeye balls on wax paper until completely cool and hardened.
