How to Make a Finding Nemo Cake

Pint-sized fans of "Finding Nemo," the feel-good movie about a fish father searching for his lost son, delight in a clownfish cake to celebrate their special day. While you could simply make a Nemo picture on a flat cake, you'll be the hero of the party with a three-dimensional Nemo atop an aquatic cake with other stars of the movie, including Marlin, Dori and the father/son sea turtle duo, Crush and Squirt.

  • The aquatic-themed cake starts with blue icing -- rolled fondant or buttercream frosting will do. Brush piping gel on frosting to give it a glossy finish, make wavy designs in buttercream with a comb tool, or cut out wave-shaped strips from fondant to give the look of real water.

Fondant can be modeled in much the same as modeling clay to make three-dimensional characters, but it is too soft to make very large figures. Instead, shape the "Finding Nemo" creatures from marshmallow cereal treats and cover the shapes with thinly rolled tinted fondant. Nemo and Marlin, both clown fish, should be bright orange with thin strips of white and black fondant to make the stripes.

To make Dori, roll out bright blue fondant with dark blue along the back and yellow accents on the tail and fins. Display the figures on top of the cake. Create coral, seaweed and other small aquatic plants and creatures with fondant and place them attractively to finish a "Finding Nemo" cake.
