How to Make a Donut Cake For Your Wedding (7 Steps)

A donut cake is nontraditional and less extravagant than the typical wedding cake. It is constructed by layering donuts and gluing them together with cake frosting. This is especially well suited to a casual wedding celebration, but it can be dressed up like any other wedding cake.

Things You'll Need

  • Several dozen donuts
  • One or two containers of cake frosting

Instructions

  1. Coordinate the overall look you'd like for your donut cake. Purchase any wedding toppers or accessories.

  2. Call your local donut shop ahead of time and pre-order the donuts. You'll need roughly four to five dozen donuts and a dozen or two donut holes.

  3. Pick up the donuts the morning of your wedding day. It needs to be made the same day so the donuts are nice and fresh.

  4. Arrange your donuts on a cake plate. You can either use a tiered tray or layer the donuts pyramid style on a single cake plate. Start with a strong base layer.

  5. When adding layers, dab a little bit of cake icing between the top and bottom donut, to help keep it in place. This will also add a little bit of extra sweetness and help the donuts stay together.

  6. Once you've added all your layers, fill in any gaps with donut holes.

  7. Decorate the cake any way you'd like. Donuts are spongy and hold cake figures well.
