How to Construct a Candy Bar Cake

Cakes will never go out of fashion as a celebratory treat, but there's always room for clever alternatives. Cupcakes and doughnuts can be combined into a fair approximation of a conventional cake, or for a less-obvious alternative you can make a candy bar cake. This isn't a cake as such, but candy bars arranged around a cylindrical form to give them the appearance of a cake. When done with panache, it can be a worthy and memorable treat.

Things You'll Need

  • Cookie tins, cardboard craft boxes or foam cake forms
  • Cake board
  • Glue gun and glue stick, preferably low-temperature
  • Tape (optional)
  • Candy bars
  • Mini candy bars or individually wrapped candies
  • Ribbons, bows, lollipops or other decorations (optional)

Instructions

  1. Arrange one or more cookie tins, cardboard craft boxes or foam cake forms to make a structure that is at least as tall as the candy bars you're using. If necessary, stack two together to make it the correct height.

  2. Place the structural form on a cake board. Glue or tape the form in place so it's stable.

  3. Plug in the glue gun, and load it with a stick of glue. Low-temperature glue guns are best for candy bar cakes, as they're less likely to melt the plastic wrappers on the candy bars.

  4. Make a bead of glue on the side of your form, and press the first candy bar to it. Hold it for a moment while the glue sets, then repeat with the second candy bar. Continue until the sides are completely covered.

  5. Cover the top by gluing down a mixture of full-sized and bite-sized candy bars, or individually wrapped candies, to fill the space. Decorate it further, if you wish, with ribbons, bows or a "bouquet" of lollipops inserted into a concealed foam base.
