How to Make Gold Fondant Paint (4 Steps)

Though you can buy several ready-made fondant paints to decorate your cakes, you also can make your own. This is especially recommended if you wish to use gold paint. The metallic color will shimmer and shine off of your cake and surely please the recipient. Use an alcohol or extract to make gold fondant paint instead of water to prevent over-saturating the fondant.

Things You'll Need

  • Gold dry food coloring powder
  • Mixing bowl
  • Lemon extract or grain alcohol (vodka or gin)
  • Clean, soft paintbrush

Instructions

  1. Add a few tablespoons of your gold powdered dry food coloring to a small glass mixing bowl. Glass is suggested because the coloring can stain plastics.

  2. Pour a little of the lemon extract or grain alcohol into the bowl with the coloring. You want the powder to be wet. Slowly mix until the power is damp or wet.

  3. Pour a bit more of your lemon extract or grain alcohol into the coloring as you mix. Continue this until you get it to a milk-like consistency. Add more dry coloring if it's too wet.

  4. Dip the tip of the soft paintbrush into the gold fondant paint. Test the brush on a piece of flat scrap fondant to ensure your mix is correct.
