How to Stick Cake Decorations on a Cake (9 Steps)

As an alternative to purchasing a cake from a store, you can decorate one from home to mimic a professional design. A professional cake typically has evenly spread icing and some sort of decorations set into the top. If set correctly, the icing will bond to the decorations and hold them firmly in place. Properly sticking decorations to a cake requires a few simple kitchen supplies and 25 minutes of spare time.

Things You'll Need

  • Icing
  • Butter knife
  • Small bowl
  • Water

Instructions

  1. Cover a room-temperature cake in an even layer of icing, using a butter knife. Do not neglect coating the sides of the cake as well as the top.

  2. Place the cake into the refrigerator for 15 minutes to set and firm the icing.

  3. Fill a small bowl halfway with water and set it to the side of your working surface.

  4. Remove the cake from the refrigerator and set it onto your working surface.

  5. Hold a cake decoration by the edges, with the flat side facing down and the textured side facing upward.

  6. Dip the flat side of the cake decoration into the bowl of water. Hold the decoration here, allowing it to soak for five seconds.

  7. Remove the decoration and shake it lightly so excess water drips back into the bowl.

  8. Place the decoration on the cake evenly, pressing it lightly into the icing. When you press it into the icing, place one finger on the center of the decoration and apply lightly pressure. The moisture from the water will soak into the icing and bond the decoration to the cake.

  9. Repeat the process with any remaining decorations. Once it is decorated, place the cake back into the refrigerator.
