Tennis Cake Decorating Ideas
If you are making a cake for someone who has a bit of a sweet spot for tennis, then a cake with an explicit tennis theme could be just what you are looking for. Some tennis-themed cakes are obvious, while others take a bit of preparation and organization. Whichever style you choose, you can be sure that the thought you put into making the tailor-made cake for someone special to you, will be rewarded by that person's reaction when they first set eyes upon it.
Tennis Court
-
One of the more obvious ideas for decorating a tennis cake -- thanks to its basic rectangular shape -- is the tennis court itself. This cake can be made by covering a rectangular cake in green icing and laying out the court markings with white piped icing. A toy net can then be added, or if you'd prefer, a net can be made out of wafer and decorated with a criss-cross of white icing to complete the court.
Tennis Ball
-
The shape of a tennis ball means making a tennis ball cake is a slightly awkward endeavor. Construction of the cake can be tackled one of two ways -- by carving a spherical shape out a sponge cake to create a realistic looking ball, or by creating a convex, circle shape and then decorating it as a tennis ball. Use green icing and dyed green coconut shavings to create the flock texture of the ball.
Tennis Racket
-
The shape of a tennis racket may seem like a fiddly one to construct, but the basic structure can be made up of a narrow rectangular cake attached to an oval shaped cake with icing. Use contrasting colors of icing to differentiate between the frame of the racket and the strings. A lighter color with a mesh of piped icing across the middle works well for strings.
Wimbledon Logo
-
An avid spectator of tennis will love a cake in the shape of the logo of their favorite grand slam tournament. The circular logo of the Wimbledon tournament in London makes it an ideal subject for a cake. Bake a circular cake and cover with a layer of blue icing. Then cut a circle of green icing and place in the center of the cake, going over the join with some thick, white, piped icing. Carefully, pipe the lettering of "The Championships, Wimbledon" onto the blue part of the icing before switching to a thinner piped icing to draw the crossed tennis racket logo onto the green part.
