How much fennel seeds instead of one star anise?

Fennel seeds cannot directly substitute star anise. However, you can use 1 teaspoon of ground fennel seeds, combined with ¼ teaspoon of ground cinnamon and ⅛ teaspoon of ground cloves, as a good substitute for 1 star anise.
