How to Make Mulling Spices

Mulling spices are useful for making a variety of beverages. When you add mulling spices to hot or cold beverages, they instantly have a spicy aroma and delicious taste that will set the beverage apart from the typical beverage. Not only are mulling spices wonderful when you add them to beverages, they are also delightful when you simmer them in water on the stove top. The simmering mulling spices will fill your home with an inviting scent.

Things You'll Need

  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Whole allspice
  • Dried orange peels
  • Whole cloves
  • Small bowl
  • Airtight container or plastic storage bag (zipper type)
  • 2 flexible cutting boards
  • Small hammer

Instructions

  1. Place one flexible cutting board on the counter. Place five or six cinnamon sticks onto the cutting board, and cover them with the second cutting board. Use the hammer to pound the cinnamon sticks into small pieces. Pour the crushed cinnamon sticks into the bowl.

  2. Measure and add equal parts of the whole allspice, the dried orange peels and the whole cloves to the bowl. Mix all of the ingredients well.

  3. Pour the mulling spices into the airtight container or into the plastic storage bag. Seal the container or the bag tightly.

  4. Store the mulling spices indefinitely at room temperature.

  5. Add the mulling spices to tea, cider, wine or juice by adding 1 tbsp. of mulling spices for every half gallon of beverage. Allow the mulling spices to sit in the beverage for 45 minutes, and then strain out the spices to serve.
