What are composite fruits?
Composite fruits are a type of fruit that is formed from the fusion of multiple flowers.
- Example includes pineapple, blackberry, mulberries, and fig.
When multiple flowers fuse together, the resulting fruit is called a multiple or aggregate fruit. Each flower contributes its ovary to the fruit, resulting in a fruit with multiple carpels.
- In the case of pineapple, the individual fruitlets fuse to form a single structure.
- In the case of blackberry, the fruitlets are distinct but are held together by a fleshy receptacle.
Composite fruits can also be classified as simple fruits, as they are not derived from a single ovary.
