When listing out ingredients do you capitalize them?
In general, it is not necessary to capitalize the names of ingredients in a list unless they are proper nouns or the first word of the list. For example:
Ingredients:
- flour
- sugar
- eggs
- butter
- vanilla extract
In this list, only "vanilla extract" is capitalized because it is a proper noun.
However, if the list is part of a larger text, it may be appropriate to capitalize all of the ingredients to make them stand out. For example:
Ingredients:
FLOUR
SUGAR
EGGS
BUTTER
VANILLA EXTRACT
In this case, the all-capital letters help to distinguish the ingredients from the rest of the text.
Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to capitalize ingredients is a matter of style.
