How to Store Tofu (10 Steps)
Tofu comes in all kinds of shapes, sizes, textures and packaging. Tofu is generally extra firm, firm, soft, or silken, and can be bought in aseptic packages, water-filled tubs, a vacuum pack or in bulk at Asian markets. However you buy tofu, it's a perishable product, and it's essential to learn how to store it properly so you can retain its freshness and prevent spoilage.

Buy Tofu

Shop around to find the type of tofu you're looking for, and to find the best deals.

Look in the produce section first, or try the dairy or deli sections of your grocery store.

Check the expiry date stamped on the tofu before you buy it. Tofu should not be used after this date.
Store Tofu in the Refrigerator

Store tofu in your fridge right away.

Open the package only right before using the tofu.

Place leftovers back in the fridge, covered with water, for no more than 1 week.

Change the water daily. Fresh water helps to keep the tofu moist, prevents drying out (which leads to spoilage), and prevents the tofu from absorbing the flavors and smells of surrounding foods in the fridge.

Freeze tofu in ready-to-use amounts for up to 5 months after purchase.

Defrost when ready to use.
