How to Store Canned Food (5 Steps)
Canned foods are the easiest way to store food safely for about a year. Households should keep a supply of canned goods on hand that could last in case of emergencies. However, the provisions won't be much good unless you know how to store them.
Instructions
-
Store canned food in a cool, dry place. Prolonged storage over 75 degrees F can cause nutrient loss and storage over 100 degrees F can spoil the food.
-
If a can isn't dated, use a permanent marker to note the date you bought it on top of the can. Low-acid foods, meats and seafood should be consumed within 12 months. High-acid foods should be consumed within 18 months.
-
Rotate your canned goods to make sure the oldest are toward the front of your storage cabinet. Most canned goods are made with an expiration or "use by" date for you to keep track of how old they are.
-
Use canned goods within 1 year for best quality. They can last up to 2 years or longer, but the quality won't be as good because the can starts to deteriorate and affects the food's flavor.
-
Remove canned goods from the can and store them in a nonmetallic refrigerated container if you don't eat them right away. Glass jars of canned food can be stored as they are. Eat refrigerated meats or fish within 2 days and other foods within 4 days.
