How to Make a Fabric Cover for Jelly and Jam Jars

Elvis may have drunk his liquor from an old fruit jar, but there's no reason not to dress up a jam or jelly jar with a spiffy fabric cover for the holidays or for gift-giving. A fabric cover for a jam or jelly jar provides country charm and custom-made whimsy for the home or gift. The utilitarian, practical jelly or jam jar becomes a craft sensation with a few simple fabric scraps, scissors and some glue.

Things You'll Need

  • 5- or 8-inch diameter circle fabric (5-inch for pint, 8-inch for quart jars)
  • Jelly or jam jar
  • Ribbon--enough to circle lid and tie a bow
  • Scissors
  • Pinking shears
  • Glue gun and glue sticks
  • Rubber band
  • Tape measure

Under the Jar Lid Fabric Cover

  1. Cut around the fabric circle, ¼ to ½ inch from the outer edge, with pinking shears.

  2. Open the outer ring on the canning jar lid.

  3. Place the fabric circle on top of the sealing lid and replace the outer ring. Screw tight.

  4. Glue a ribbon bow on the front of the jar lid.

Over the Jar Lid Fabric Cover

  1. Cut around the fabric circle, ¼ to ½ inch from the outer edge, with pinking shears.

  2. Squirt a dab of glue onto the top center of the jar lid.

  3. Place the fabric circle on top of the lid and press center of fabric circle against the drop of glue.

  4. Place a rubber band around the jar lid edge, holding down the fabric circle.

  5. Cut a length of ribbon that circles the jar lid. Glue a ribbon around the lid, concealing the rubber band, and glue a bow to the front of the lid, covering the ends of the ribbon.
