Can Avocados Be Refrigerated?
The word avocado comes from the Aztec word ahuacatl. Avocados are a dark green skinned fruit with a light and buttery center. These fruits are found year-round in most grocery stores, but are best when they are eaten during the growing season, which spans the spring and summer months. Avocado storage is important to retain the flavor of the avocado.
Ripened Avocados
-
Avocados can be stored in the refrigerator, but only after they have completely ripened. Ripened avocados are slightly soft, but not mushy.
Whole Avocados
-
Ripened avocados store best in the refrigerator when they are left whole. Whole avocados do not brown like sliced avocados will.
Sliced Avocados
-
The unused portion of an avocado can be stored in the refrigerator if it is enclosed in plastic wrap and has been sprinkled with lemon juice. Lemon juice helps to prevent browning.
Ripening Process
-
Before avocados have ripened, they should be stored in a brown paper bag to induce the ripening process.
Storage Time
-
Both cut and whole avocados can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week.
