How to Use Dehydrated Onions (5 Steps)
Add the flavor of onions to your recipes without the pungency of fresh onions. Dehydrated onions will not make you cry when you use them in your recipes. Removing the water from the onions increases their shelf-life up to two years. Since the dried onions' weight is reduced after removing the water, dehydrated onions are an ideal option to carry on camping trips or to keep in an emergency food supply. Look for dehydrated onions in the spice section of most grocery stores and in camping stores.
Things You'll Need
- 2/3 cup water
- Spice grinder
Instructions
-
Soak 1/3 cup of dehydrated onions in the water for 10 to 15 minutes or until tender and the onions have absorbed most of the water.
-
Drain any remaining water.
-
Add the reconstituted onions to any recipe to replace 1 cup of chopped fresh onions.
-
Grind dried onions in a spice grinder to replace onion powder in your recipes.
-
Add 1/3 cup of dehydrated onions and the water at the same time without soaking the onions to simmered dishes like soups, stews or casseroles. This will replace 1 cup of chopped onions.
